– BP Weighing In… Again –

Monday, March 31st, 2008

————————————————————————————-

Regular readers know that I’m just ever-so-slightly itsy-bitsy weary of commentary/analysis of the Luneau video, which thus far has proven nothing, except to demonstrate the ambiguity and subjective nature of 4 fuzzy video seconds (much like the ambiguity and subjective nature of so many “facts” in this debate). While we await whatever Cornell may have to say about Bevier’s and Collinson’s efforts to make the filmed bird into a Pileated, Bill Pulliam has yet-again posted more counter-thoughts on the subject at his blog:

….and ’round-and-’round it goes.

“His Faithful Follower I Will Be!”

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men” (Psalm 12:1).

Last night we went to a park in Lebanon, PA to hear one of Brooksyne’s favorite gospel groups, a family known as The Martins. They’re three adult siblings, a brother and two sisters, who have a beautiful harmonious sound and a genuine love for the Lord Jesus. I suppose Brooksyne also likes them because of their country roots since they grew up in Arkansas where much of her family comes from. They sang an old hymn that many of you will recognize called “He Leadeth Me.”

There’s a line in the hymn that always stirs my soul and reinforces my desire to faithfully serve the Lord. It simply states, “His faithful follower I would be.” Hopefully you were in church yesterday and received fresh strength from the Lord as You heard His Word proclaimed from the pulpit. Unfortunately, in the New Testament period, even as now, some had forsaken this important element of growth and discipleship. As we see the Day of Christ’s return drawing ever closer we need the God-ordained encouragement that comes from fellowshipping with “one another” on a regular basis.

David expresses himself in our second daily text in a way that we might also in our own day. His cry for help is directed to the Lord. His observation is that the “godly man ceaseth”. David grew up during a time of great moral and spiritual apostasy. Certainly Saul’s reign was not marked by spiritual revival or consistent obedience to God. It transitioned from the period of the Judges, which is summed up with the phrase “each man did what was right in his own eyes.” However there was a remnant of faithful followers during this period such as Samuel.

Thank God for those who remain faithful followers in our own day. Faithful ministers who preach God’s Word in an uncompromising manner, dedicated lay people who live out their faith before an oft-scorning world, married couples who take the marital covenant seriously, parents who raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and church communities that continue to “forsake not the assembling together.”

Christ said “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). This statement has often intrigued me. Will He? Join me today in making a renewed commitment in staying faithful to our God as we daily heed to His call upon our lives. Rest in the assurance that He will continue to lead us and join me in declaring this day, “His faithful follower I will be!”

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me. *

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Daily Prayer: Father, You lead us through the valleys and mountain top experiences of everyday life. Your ways are far superior to the path we might choose when guided by our own errant wisdom. We’re so grateful for the strength and encouragement we receive from our brothers and sisters who bear our burdens and share in our joys. When considering the choice of walking faithfully with you or turning our backs on You, we join with Simon Peter who weighed the options and declared, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68,69).

Saturday I went to a Transport for Christ trucker’s rally along with Ester and a friend, Ken Pierce. Transport for Christ is a chaplain ministry to the trucking industry. They had a parade of trucks, many blaring their horns along the way. Pictured above is one of the colorful examples.

Mike and Sue Hayden serve with Transport for Christ. For several years they were field chaplains in the south. Now they work in the national office near our home. They have an interesting way of blessing others. They both purposefully allow their hair to grow out and then donate it to “Locks of Love” which makes wigs for children with cancer. Mike even donates his beard!

This last Saturday night Mark Pulliam and his family came over for dinner with our family. Mark was my supervisor for a year and 1/2 when I worked for a national agency about 5 years ago. He is now working in the field of hospital chaplaincy. At my request he brought over a pineapple pie since he knows it’s a favorite of mine!

Let me share a cute but instructive story that happened around our dinner table. Mark and his wife Carolyn were sharing about a time when they vacationed in Madison, Wisconsin. On a Sunday they decided to attend chuch and chose to attend one outside their normal association. It was a church that had historic Christian roots but had entered into apostacy (which they were not aware of when they chose to visit.) The church promoted goddess worship and clergy referred to God as “she.” As Mark and Carolyn were sharing their experience with us, young Michael who was listening attentively, piped up with a serious question, “Isn’t God a guy?” That gave further opportunity for some good solid Biblical teaching! Sadly many institutions that bear the name of Christ have forsaken Biblical truth and replaced it with heretical teachings.

Brooksyne’s Note: The inspiring hymn “He Leadeth Me” has been a favorite of mine for years. Hearing the Martins sing it acapella in their Martinized arrangement has made me appreciate it even more. This hymn was written by Pastor Joseph Gilmore in 1862 when he was 28 years old. He had preached a sermon on the 23rd Psalm in First Baptist Church in Philadelphia on a Wednesday evening. Following the service he and his wife were invited to fellowship in the home of Deacon Watson. During their conversation the blessedness of God’s leading overwhelmed his spirit, so much in fact, that he quickly penned the words of “He Leadeth Me” and then passed it on to his wife. He thought no more of it, but Mrs. Gilmore decided to submit the verses to a popular Christian journal at the time. Three years later as Joseph Gilmore was candidating for a new pastorate in New York he opened the church’s hymnal and much to his surprise found the words he had penned years earlier. William Bradbury who wrote the music added the last two lines, “His faithful follower I would be, for by His hand He leadeth me.”

It seems that my provider Bluehost.com had our dedicated IP number turned off, like forever… making it difficult for people to download the magazine… If you haven’t downloaded The new edition of The Invisible College yet… here is the link!

Beautiful here in Portland… Clouds fleeting overhead (well, starting to loom) coolish. I walked out this morning to the most astounding beauty… the garden almost roaring with delight, the robins flitting and the squirrels playing. We live in paradise, and yes the cup is half full.

Fairy Help - The Phouka

The Phouka is a friendly being, and often helps the farmer at his work if he is treated well and kindly. One day a farmer’s son was minding cattle in the field when something rushed past him like the wind; but he was not frightened, for he knew it was the Phouka on his way to the old mill by the moat where the fairies met every night. So he called out,” Phouka, Phouka! show me what you are like, and I’ll give you my big coat to keep you warm.” Then a young bull came to him lashing his tail like mad; but Phadrig threw the coat over him, and in a moment he was quiet as a lamb, and told the boy to come to the mill that night when the moon was up, and he would have good luck.

So Phadrig went, but saw nothing except sacks of corn all lying about on the ground, for the men had fallen asleep, and no work was done. Then he lay down also and slept, for he was very tired: and when he woke up early in time morning there was all the meal ground, though certainly the men had not done it, for they still slept. And this happened for three nights, after which Phadrig determined to keep awake and watch.

Now there was an old chest in the mill, and he crept into this to hide, and just looked through the keyhole to see what would happen. And exactly at midnight six little fellows came in, each, carrying a sack of corn upon his back; and after then came an old man in tattered rags of clothes, and he bade them turn the mill, and they turned and turned till all was ground.

Then Phadrig ran to tell his father, and the miller determined to watch, the next night with his son, and both together saw the same thing happen.

“Now,” said the farmer, “I see it is the Phouka’s work, and let him work if it pleases him, for the men are idle and lazy and only sleep. So I’ll pack the whole set off to-morrow, and leave the grinding of the corn to this excellent old Phouka.”

After this the farmer grew so rich that there was no end to his money, for he had no men to pay, and all his corn was ground without his spending a penny. Of course the people wondered much over his riches, but he never told them about the Phouka, or their curiosity would have spoiled the luck.

Now Phadrig went often to the mill and hid in the chest that he might watch the fairies at work; but he had great pity for the poor old Phouka in his tattered clothes, who yet directed everything and had hard work of it sometimes keeping the little Phoukas in order. So Phadrig, out of love and gratitude, bought a blue suit of cloth and silk and laid it one night on the floor of the mill just where the old Phouka always stood to give his orders to the little men, and then he crept into the chest to watch.

“How is this?” said the Phouka when he saw the clothes. “Are these for me? I shall be turned into a fine gentleman.”

And he put them on, and then began to walk up and down admiring himself. But suddenly he remembered the corn and went to grind as usual, then stopped and cried out–”No, no. No more work for me. Fine gentlemen don’t grind corn. I’ll go out and see a little of the world and show my fine clothes.” And he kicked away the old rags into a corner, and went out.

No corn was ground that night, nor the next, nor the next; all the little Phoukas ran away, and not a sound was heard in the mill. Then Phadrig grew very sorry for the loss of his old friend, and used to go out into the fields and call out, “Phouka, Phouka! come back to me. Let me see your face.” But the old Phouka never came back, and all his life long Phadrig never looked on the face of his friend again. However, the farmer had made so much money that he wanted no more help; and he sold the mill, and reared up Phadrig to be a great scholar and a gentleman, who had his own house and land and servants. And in time he married a beautiful lady, so beautiful that the people said she must be daughter to the king of the fairies.

A strange thing happened at the wedding, for when they all stood up to drink the bride’s health, Phadrig saw beside him a golden cup filled with wine. And no one knew how, the golden cup had come to his hand; but Phadrig guessed it was the Phouka’s gift, and he drank the wine without fear and made his bride drink also. And ever after their lives were happy and prosperous, and the golden cup was kept as a treasure in the family, and the descendants of Phadrig have it in their possession to this day.

The Voice of Pierre de Ronsard

ODE À CASSANDRE - ODE TO CASSANDRA

Sweetheart let us together go and see
If this morning’s rose which opened up
Her crimson robe to Father Sun,
Has not this even shed the folds
Of her crimson dress and her damask cheek
With its colour so like your own.

Alas! Look - in how short a space
Sweetheart she has upon this place
Alas! Alas! let drop her beauty!
Oh Mother Nature harsh and strong
Since such a flower lasts scarce so long
As from the dawn to eventide.

So hear my words my own sweetheart
While your young days are in full bloom,
Gather the rosebuds of youth today -
Its fresh green newness will not stay -
As with this flower will come old age
To tarnish all your beauty.

Mignonne, allons voir si la rose
Qui ce matin avait déclose
Sa robe de pourpre au soleil,
A point perdu cette vesprée
Les plis de sa robe pourprée,
Et son teint au votre pareil.

Las! Voyez comme en peu d’espace,
Mignonne, elle a dessus la place,
Las, las ses beautéz laissé cheoir!
O vrayment marastre Nature,
Puisqu’une telle fleur ne dure
Que du matin jusques au soir!

Donc, si vous me croyez, mignonne,
Tandis que vostre âge fleuronne
En sa plus verte nouveauté,
Cueillez, cueillez vostre jeunesse:
Comme à ceste fleur, la vieillesse
Fera ternir vostre beauté.
——–

AVANT LE TEMPS TES TEMPES FLEURIRONT -
BEFORE ITS TIME YOUR BROW WILL BE IN BLOOM

‘Before its time your brow will be in bloom,
‘Your end will be defined by too few days,
‘Before the evening falls your day will fade,
‘Betrayed by hope your thoughts will perish soon.

‘Your lines will vanish - I shall not be moved,
‘In your collapse my destiny will hang.
‘For I was born to abuse the poets’ gang
‘And our descendants will but mock your mood.

‘You’ll be the laughing-stock of the common man,
‘You’ll build your castles on the shifting sands,
‘And useless are your paintings in the skies.’

Those were the words of the nymph who drives me mad,
When heaven, witness to the words she said,
With a well-aimed flash sent omens to my eyes.

‘Avant le temps tes tempes fleuriront,
‘De peu de jours ta fin sera bornée,
‘Avant le soir se clorra ta journée,
‘Trahis d’espoir tes pensers periront:

‘Sans me flechir tes escrits fletriront,
‘En ton desastre ira ma destinée,
‘Pour abuser les poètes je suis née,
‘De tes souspirs nos neveux se riront.

‘Tu seras fait du vulgaire la fable,
‘Tu bastiras sur l’incertain du sable,
‘Et vainement tu peindras dans les cieux.’

Ainsi disoit la Nymphe qui m’affolle,
Lorsque le ciel, tesmoin de sa parolle,
D’un dextre éclair fut presage à mes yeux.
——-

JE VOUS ENVOIE UN BOUQUET QUE MA MAIN -
I SEND YOU A BOUQUET THAT WITH MY HANDS

I send you a bouquet that with my hands
I have selected from these full-blown flowers:
If they had not been plucked in the evening hours,
Tomorrow they would all lie in the sand.

Let that be an example to you all:
Your charms, although they may be in full flower,
Will very soon be withered, dry and brown,
And like these blossoms, they will shortly fall.

For time speeds onward, time speeds on, my lady,
Alas! it’s we who must speed on, not time,
And soon we’ll be surrendered to the blade:

And these loves we are speaking of, so fine,
There’ll be no news of them when we are the past:
So love me now, so long your beauty lasts.

Health Budget: U.S. Federal Government FY 2008

Monday, March 17th, 2008

SUMMARY OF BUSH ADMINISTRATION FY’ 08 HEALTH BUDGET

On February 5, 2007, the President Bush released his FY ’08 Budget. This budget would increase discretionary spending to $929.8 billion, an increase of $57 billion or 6.5%. But fully $53.5 billion of the total increase will go to security programs – defense, homeland security, and international affairs. Domestic discretionary programs, such as health care and education, will grow by only 1%, or $3.5 billion. Below is a brief summary of the President’s FY ’08 proposals for health programs of interest to the academic medical community.

NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH – TOTAL FUNDING: $29.8 BILLION, a cut of 1.7% or $511 million below the FY 07 Continuing Resolution that is currently funding federal programs. The President’s Budget includes a $300 million transfer from NIH to the Global AIDS fund, reducing the available total for NIH to $28.321 billion. The cut from FY ’07 is further reduced when the biomedical inflator, expected to be above 3%, is factored in.
Individual Institutes: except for the NIAID, which would receive a $210 million increase, no other institute would receive more than a $7 million increase. The NIH Director - increase of $38 million. Road Map for Medical Research – $486 million, a 17% increase. The Road map includes interdisciplinary research involving different Institutes. Grant Support – the Administration emphasized in its announcement that despite the overall cut for NIH, the budget would allow funding for 10% more new grants than in 2006. This will translate to 10,188 new grants and competitive renewals, indicating an increase close to the 10,411 new grants funded in 2003, the final year of the doubling of the NIH budget process. The Administration explained that it is able to provide these grant increases because currently funded multi-year grants will not receive inflationary increases. The grant success rate will remain at about 20%, or about 1 in 5 grants (by comparison, in 2001, the rate was 1 in 3). National Research Service Awards – 17,520 training positions supported. Pathways to Independence - $31 million, doubled from previous year for these five-year research grants for post-doctoral researchers. National Children’s Study – 0 funding. This program, which is intended
to track 100,000 children from birth to adulthood, with special attention to autism, diabetes and other childhood diseases, is expected to cost $2.7 billion and was considered too expensive, in light of other priorities. Executive Level I Salaries – $168,000, by reducing NIH, SAMHSA, and AHRQ extramural Level I grant salaries to ’07 Executive Level II. The current Executive Level I rate is $186,600. Other health and science programs: Ryan White HIV/AIDS programs - $2.2 billion, an increase of $95 million. Health Professions Training - $10 million, a cut of $135 million that eliminates all Title VII programs but Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. Title VII Student Loan Rescissions – approximately $105 million cut, achieved by the Administration recalling the federal portion of Title VII and VIII student loans programs that include Health Professions Student Loan, Loans for Disadvantaged Students, Primary Care Loans, and Nursing Student Loans. Institutions would be required to return all uncommitted loan funds, amounting to approximately $4 million per institution. National Health Service Corps - $116 million, a $7.2% decrease from ’07. $31 million would come from the NHSC field program, and $85 million from the NHSC recruitment appropriations, which provides scholarship and loan repayment awards. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) - $330 million, an increase of $11 million. Patient safety would receive $34 million, Personalized Health Care Initiative $15 million, and health information technology $45 million, including $26 million for the Ambulatory Patient Safety Program. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): would receive $5.8 billion, a 5.9% cut. $93 million of this total would be committed to increased testing for HIV/AIDS among high-risk populations; $138 million, a $1 million cut from FY ’06, would go towards injury prevention and control; and public health research would receive $31million. The Preventive Services Block Grant, funded at $99 million in FY ’06, would be eliminated. The National Center for Health Statistics would receive $109 million, derived from transfers from other agencies. Bioterrorism Preparedness: The Health Research Services Administration (HRSA) would receive level funding at $474 million for preparedness, but its training and curriculum development programs would be cut 43% to $ 9 million.
CDC biodefense would total $1.7 billion, including $593 million for the Strategic National Stockpile, $3 million for botulinum toxin research, $824 for state and local preparedness, and $136 for CDC’s own preparedness capacity.
NIH would receive $1.9 billion for biodefense. Veterans Administration:
VA Research would receive a total of $414 million, a decrease of $13 million, or 3.0% below FY ’06. The VA estimates that this funding will support 2,045 research projects, - 66, or 3.2% below FY ’06. The total funding would support:
Medical and Prosthetics Research funded at $399 million, 3.2% below FY’ 06;
Research IT, the VA’s contribution to the new national IT Fund, funded at $15 million, $50 thousand more than last year.
VA Medical Care: would receive $33.075 billion, a 12.1 % increase. The Administration is depending on legislation that would increase veterans’ enrollment fees and pharmacy co-pays to generate additional funds (but also decrease veterans’ enrollment). National Science Foundation: would receive a 7.9% increase for a total of $6.020 billion. This increase is part of the President’s American Competitiveness Initiative, aimed at strengthening the country’s research and development in the physical sciences. Of the overall total, NSF Research – would receive $4.666 billion (a 7.7% increase).

Lessons the Internet Has Taught Me

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Everyone else gets all the fun trolls.

My side of the internet is the cool side. We’re also sexier and dress better.

Using your blog to grind personal axes gets really old really fast.

Marvel has been corrupted by the homosexuals. Or the Arabs. Or possibly the gay Arabs.

YouTube makes up for not having anything to say today quite nicely.

There’s nothing the slightest bit hypocritical about praising Marvel for doing the same things you criticize DC for doing.

I’m far too polite. The fact that I haven’t responded to anyone’s post on any blog or message board with the phrase “you’re fucking retarded, aren’t you” is proof of that.

The knee-jerk homophobia of comic fans never stops being entertaining.
The knee-jerk misogyny is just soul-crushing however.
At least they’ve stopped being overtly racist. Most of the time.

Manga has gotten as boring as American comics. But, shh, we’re not supposed to talk about that. Or the blatant misogyny and racism in so much of it. Because it’s self-evidently superior to American comics.

I’d read more indie comics if the creators weren’t pretentious jerks. Or half as whiny. Or quite so obviously only creating comics in order to impress girls.

We have the comics industry we deserve.

Dan Didio apparently spends his weekends jetting around the country and running over comic fan’s dogs. And Joe Quesada rides shotgun.

God help me, I miss Bill Jemas.

If comic fans go for more than forty-eight hours without complaining about something online, they’ll have an aneurysm.

Watching people miss the point leads to wonderful, unintended comedy. Than great sadness. Then comedy again.

Why yes, I do think less of you if MySpace is your blogging platform of choice.

I only read your blog to forward links to posts to my friends. And then we make fun of you. Because that’s all your blog is good for.

Tokyopop is the Marvel of manga. No, that’s not a compliment.

People really like comics about mice. Yet Gemstone had to cancel Mickey Mouse.

The people that Shakespeare joke was aimed at didn’t get it.

Saying that you think Justice is good will make me think less of you.

On the whole, I could do with less people who think trying to imitate a popular writer’s online persona makes them seem intelligent or witty.
Yes, that goes for the writer in question as well. Actually, the phrase “shut up and write some comics” comes to mind.

Concern trolling, when applied to comics, is just sort of tragic.

That the qualitative differences between, say, an Adam Hughes picture and a Michael Turner picture escapes people gives me cause for concern.

Guys, she’s not going to sleep with you, and yes, your intentions are just that transparent.

The existence of the internet is justified by pictures of cats and other animals with funny captions.

We’ve finally moved on from people thinking that “irony” means “made of iron.”
Sadly, people now seem to think it means “to press a hot plate of metal against cloth.”

The Olympic Games The History of The Olympic Games

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Olympics or The Olympic Games is a multi-sports event which takes place once in four years and comprises of winter and summer games. It is an international event and almost all the countries in the globe participate in the games. The first Olympic game was held in the year 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. The games were held in Greece till 393 AD. Subsequently in 1896, Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, a French nobleman revived the games which heralded the beginning of the Modern Olympic Games. Starting from 1896, Games of the Olympiad or The Summer Olympics were held once in four years except during the World War 1 and 2.The Olympic Winter Games, a special edition of winter sports was first held in 1924. In the beginning, both summer and winter editions of The Olympic Games were held simultaneously. From 1944 onwards the summer and winter games have been held two years apart. Find more info at www.olympicsresource.infoThe origin of the ancient Olympic Games was surrounded by many legends. The ancient Greek concept of Olympic Truce is one such legend associated with The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games reached their zenith during fifth and sixth century BC. The Olympic Games were held in honour of Pelops a mythical king and divine hero of the Greeks. Poems were written and statues were created immortalizing the winners of the events in the Olympic Games. Milo of Croton, a wrestler in the sixth century BC, was the only victorious athlete in six Olympic Games. After the Romans captured power in Greece, there was a gradual decline in the importance of the Olympic Games. The Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympic Games in 393 CE citing the games as a Pagan Festival not suitable for the Christian Ethics. Even though the Greek ceremonies included the bearing of a torch as its integral aspect, it was not included in the ancient Olympic Games. This was introduced later as a part of the modern Olympic Games. In the 2004 Summer Olympics held in Athens, nearly 11,100 contestants from 202 countries participated in various events whereas there were only 245 participants from 15 nations in the 1896 edition of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games has become one of the biggest events for the media. In the Sydney Olympics held in 2000, more than 16,000 journalists presented the events in various media format while 3.8 billion people watched the games on Television.Munich Olympics held in 1972 saw the first act of terrorism in the Olympic Games. Subsequently the Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, and the Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002 were also subjected to acts of terrorism. For the Olympic Games scheduled to take place in London in 2012, 26 sports are included.Lucy Bartlett is a proud contributing author.
